To the Fancher Descendents, I am only learning the story about the Mountain Meadows Massacre as an adult! I asked my husband if he had heard of this tradgedy that took place so long ago, and he had not. I was reading a book about the west and came upon a chapter on the subject. I went home and got on the computer and read as much as I could. Learning about this and not forgetting is an important lesson that we should share with others. I hope to pass on the story to others. Sincerely, Genevieve Schumacher Seattle, Washington

I was rasied Mormon, and had never heard anything about what happened at Mountian Meadows. After viewing a movie on this subject I was sickened at the thought of it. I realize that I am not the church but I would like to offer my appoligies to the families as a member of the Mormon community. My wife and I are planning a trip to the site this weekend in an attempt to learn more.

I like this site, especially the photos and panaramic views. I also enjoyed reading the postings from descendants of both sides of this tragedy. I first heard of the massacre years ago while reading an old autobiography of a mountain man. He had taken a year off from trapping to investigate the massacre in Utah for the Army and had a chapter in his book telling about it. Just after reading this chapter I was visiting with my grandmother, Mary Alice (Berry)Dixon, and out of the blue she told me Mormons had killed our ancestor, John T. Baker, in the Mountain Meadow Massacre in Utah. I said, what a coincidence, I just read a story about it. I have since read several books on the subject. I feel this site helps everyone to air their feelings and to come to some point of closure. Being a Christian I must add we (Christians) are directed to forgive and love our enemies. I feel VERY compelled to go to Mountain Meadow and hope someday to do so.

I am the great-great granddaughter of John T.Baker, one of the leaders of the wagon train. I am interested in finding out more information from any Huff descendant regarding the stated fact that Captain Baker was holding the little Huff girl in his arms when he was killed. I do have a written statement to that fact, but would like to find out if there is more information.

Since I have found out about the massacre I have read several books on the subject and at present I am reading the book Mormonism Unveiled. So far everything I have read presents John Doyle Lee and a very favorable light. Its hard to believe one such as I am reading about could have been so uncaring as to take part in what occured. The sad thing is that so many went unpunished for their part in this horrible action. Thank you for your time. Donald Julien

This is a note to those who are not familiar with the MMM story who may be just starting to learn about it. This is NOT a Mormon Bashing organization or website designed to bring dis-credit on the LDS church or it's history. This organization's purpose is to promote healing on both sides and to keep the victim's memory alive and to not let the crime fade into history. In describing what happned, using the word "CRIME" may evoke uncomfortable emotions, even a hostile reaction from our LDS friends who are not familiar with what happned at the MMM. So to Jared Pickett who entered comments on January 3rd below, it is understandable why you would feel defensive when first being exposed to what happened here, but to Carol Johnson who responded to your comment on Jan 3rd with her own, right above yours, she is right on. For years no one knew for sure, but in 1999 when the skulls provided the proof, the debate ended. Any written records that place the blame of this crime SQUARELY on the Piutes is no longer valid. My comments here are to let you (Jared Pickett) know that we are not all LDS haters or Mormon bashers. I am a blood relative of Captain Jack and many of the most dearest friends in my life are LDS. Rumors and stories are now (as of 1999) separated from the FACTS. Carol responded with a firm tone and I just want to encapsulate her words with a more warmer tone....(fact speaks for itself), no twisting, no distorting, no omitting. We know the Indians didn't act alone. So Jared and anyone else who may hold his opinion, can we at least agree based on the evidence we have now that the Indians didn't act alone? If we can all agree that the Piutes didn't act alone, this should eliminate comments such as Jared's, not that we are surprised by his comments, but that it shows us there are more interested people out there who are not aware of what happened in 1999 with the accidental unearthing of the remains. It's great to see all of my relatives who have posted comments this year, hope you all have a great Thanksgiving and Christmas Season. B Baker U.S. Army

My ancestors, and great grandfathr, Cullen Lee, left Carroll County, Arkansas and drove cattle to Montana where he ended up homesteading in the 1880's. My parents still live on part of whats left of Cullen's original homestead near Great Falls, Montana. My interest in the MMM occurred after a conversation with my father regarding the survivors of the MMM. My grandfather apparently spent consider time observing newly relocated Mormon families to the Great Falls area from 1900 till after 1930. He told my father that he was still looking for possible children from the Baker/Fancher party who may have not been turned over to US Army during the summer of 1859. Not something I have ever been able to corroborate since then. Sincerely, Loren K. Lee

I love learning about this type of history, becuase I have heard things about it my who life from my grandmother, who's grandfather was the baby adpoted and raised by a mormon women. He was told about the events when he was an adult by the woman who raised him. I am greatful that there was someone decent involved in the situation. Because of this event I have no real heritage for this portion of my family.

It is plain to see that Mr. Ron Loving was bought off by the Mormon Church, as he made little attempt to notify all the family members of the unearthing of graves. As for the church to own the land that this memorial sits on, is completely insane. It should be turned over to the families, to maintain and revere as they see fit. The Mormons have had enough involvement with this sacred site, it's time for them to fess-up and move on.

I only discovered this tragedy about 5 years ago. I have read everything I could get my hands on. I think I have an open mind seeking information rather than blame. I have been to the memorial site twice and have visited John D Lee's grave in Panguitch. I will visit again in September 2006. I would like to know if the original Hamblin house where the children were sequestered is preserved at the upper end of the valley and if it is visible from any of the roads or highway. I was a long time friend and coworker of Hamblin decendents and never knew of this history. Now that I am aware of the incident I have lost track of my Hamblin contact.

I know that this event has brought much heart-ache and pain to many families and people...both then and now. One thing that has only recently been discovered is the tunnel where the belongings of the Fancher-Baker Party were buried. While the gold and silver taken during the massacre was, no doubt, spent a long time ago, the personal effects of the Party are most likely still intact within this concealed tunnel. I feel that the ancestors of the victims have full right to recover these articles.

My Mother was from Arkansas,Her Father was George Baker.George Baker's Father was John T.Baker,Who was killed in Utah.My Mother Died not far from the Monument in 2002.She lived in Hurricane Utah. She was a good woman. She always donated clothes to the Indians at Zion. She told me before she died about my History.I was Born with the name George after my Grandfather,My last name is a mystery,She would only tell me that my real father was from New York. She left him because he was Gay.My Mother Married Mr. Lyons in 1957,I took his last name.I have one picture of my real Father, the picture resembles Sandy Koufax. My Mother did date Him.But it's hard to prove,He Denies knowing my mother.I guess DNA will answer this Question.Someday I wish My History will be complete,For now I prey for my Family who was lost at Monument Meadows in Sept of 1957.And my mother who's ashes were spread over the meadows in 2002.

The Quote, “Forgiveness measures the love we have for one another” means little. For a religion to truly be forgiven it would have to acknowledge the rolls that Young and his associates played in this terrible miss-guided tragedy, Until the LSD church gets their head out of the sand and openly admits Young and his associates ordered this, how could the LSD religion be forgiven. An example would be a person going before the parole board to be released early but does not show any remorse, or acknowledge their crime they certainly would not be released would they?

For the last several years I have been gathering information for a family history book that I intend to write. In October I took a 9 day road trip from my home in the L.A. area to visit as many sites in California, Nevada and Utah as possible- sites that had some connection to my considerably large, once polygamous family. It was to be merely a "scouting" expedition, to find the places that I would return to at a later date(s). Toward the end of my trip I visited the Mountain Meadows site and spent the late morning and early afternoon hours there, taking photographs and generally trying to get my mind around the realities of what had taken place there so many years ago. I had read Juanita Brooks' book and was pretty shocked to learn that one of my family members had had a role in this tragedy- Ira Stearns Hatch. Also, Jacob Hamblin was, at the time, or later became, a close friend of my great, great grandfather, William Carroll McClellan. They went into Chihuahua, Mexico at about the same time to found the Mormon colonies there, particularly Colonia Juarez near Nuevo Casas Grandes. The whole time I was at the site I had a very powerful feeling of being strongly connected to this place. Not a negative or positive feeling, just one of "I'm supposed to come here and be aware" or something that I can't quite put into words. I had the exact same feeling when I returned to the site last month (May). I would like to hear from anyone who has an interest in Mountain Meadows from a historical standpoint, or anyone who owns the land, if it is in private hands, or from anyone who has an interest in Utah history. Best regards, Doug Wilson doug9179@yahoo.com

My 1st visit to this site was in the late 70's after reading a book of what happpen. We should all learn from this site. How rummors, gossip, ego's and not knowing can get out of control. This could happen again in our society but with out bows and arrows.

Thanks for putting up this site. John D. Lee is my g-g-g-grandfather. I don't believe that this issue will ever go away, even with a website like this. But at least people can speak their minds and get some comfort one way or another by typing their feelings.

I was glad to see this website and all the many comments. It's nice to know that we can live in American and voice our thoughts in so many ways. John D. Lee is my g-g-g-grandfather. I have read and have many books on the subject and very surprised about how much information is out there. I really feel sorry for the people that lost their lives in the Meadows. But this website will help all to express their options and hopefully heal in some small way.

Good or bad it is always nice to be able to pass down stories of the past about your family, especially when they are recorded someplace in history. My mother's grandfather was William Twitty Baker (11-15-1856 to 1-31-1937),he was a survivor of the massacre and was 11 months old. Mother is now 90 and still active. Also,if you have read "The Real Wild West" by Michael Wallis, my Dad is mentioned as a "solid cowboy" for his work on the " 101 Ranch" in Oklahoma. Old stories are the best! This is a great Website !

I have known of this crime all my life.It has always sadden me that only one person had to pay for there actions and to the extense that the morman church has went to to cover it up. Every time a morman knocked on my door I would ask them about it and they did not know what I was talking about told me I must have been mistaken. Maybe with this site and sites like this the full truth will one day come out. Until the church owns up to there part it will always be over a black cloud over them.

I think it's really great, and I congratulate the efforts of those whose hearts will always remember the older 9/11/.

As a great great granddaughter of JDL, I have been followed by this story all of my life. I have books, videos and hundreds of hours spent trying to understand this heritage. The intent of this organization to form a bond between all of those affected by this horrible history is a witness that we can seek a better future. I was touched by many of the entries in the guestbooks, but the one from the descendant of the Hatfield/McCoy feud was especially meaningful.

To the families of the immigrants:
I am very sorry for the part my great-great-great grandfather, John D. Lee played in the horrible deaths of your family members. I am sorry that the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints has lied and covered-up their part of the horrendous act of Sept 11, 1857.
I am no longer a Mormon, I cannot be part of a "religion" that lies, not only about this, but about most of its history. MY wifes great grandma Laura Annie Fancher grew up on a ranch in kingman AZ. She told us about the massacre at Mountain Meadow. It has been 22 years since, I find the story fasinating and yet quite sad. It appears that my wifes family descends from John Fancher, which from what I can tell was a brother to Capt.Alexander Fancher. If anybody could help I'am wondering if he was traveling to CA. to meet up with his brother John? Grandma died in 1988 in Madera CA. She worked a dairy with her husband Barney Cavelli. I also had met Samuel Fancher at his 85 birthday party, and also met Bernice several times. Please feel free to email any info about the Fanchers of Kingman AZ. My wife traveled to Kingman with Grandma Laura when she was younger and met some of the other members of the Family.

Great Site, I can't read enough about this tragic event. These folks were from ARKANSAS - not from Missouri, Illinois, Vermont or New York. Stop making excuses for cold blooded murder on the part of the LDS church. These folks were not killed by arrows as Dr. Novak proved in 1999. OUTSTANDING reads from Sally Denton, Juanita Brooks and Fawn Brodie. My great great grandfather's name was William Stokes and the US Marshal who arrested John D. Lee was named William Stokes. If anyone can help me out with family tree/histories, I would like to research to see if he was related.

I am Byron Jones, great grand son of Mary Minerva Fancher, one of the decendants of the family of Alexander Fancher of Arkansas. Several years ago, I read a book titled "Men to Match My Mountains", by Irving Stone, and was haunted by the Mountain Meadow Massacre. I always wondered if my great grandmother, who married Charles Newton Beeks was related to the Fanchers of Arkansas, and now that we have the convenience of the internet, the whole story has been revealed to me. I was able to connect myself to the family via James Fancher (b. 1763), brother of Isaac Fancher who was the father of Alexander (Captain of the party). Before reading your website and archives, I was a bit ashamed to be connected, but now, knowing a bit more of the history, I am proud. Thanks for making this site available. Sir, you must be reading ancient history: "Reconstructing some 18 different skulls from 2,605 pieces of bone from 28 victims, including women and children, the scientists produced the first physical evidence in a long and disputed history. The investigation “suggests the killing of women and children may have been more complicated than [in previous] accounts,” Dr. Novak wrote in her final study, presented last October to the Midwest Bioarchaeology and Forensic Anthropology Association. Among other revelations, the examinations disclosed that some of the victims, including several women and at least one child, had been killed while facing their executioners head-on, by point-blank gunshots between their eyes, rather than by being shot in the back while fleeing, as earlier accounts had claimed. Further, it became evident that the murders had been committed by white men rather than by the Paiute Indians commonly blamed for all the attacks on the women and children. And it was especially clear that John D. Lee, the one man ever held accountable for the crime, could not possibly have acted alone in a mass murder of this magnitude. Paiute leaders say the new forensic evidence supports their own oral histories that the tribe has been wrongfully blamed."

People who are against the mormons here need to read more than one account, since everything else I have read says it was the Indians of the teritory who did it. forget the history and live in the present the mormon religion is the only religion that is not hypocrytical like every other one that is out there.
